Ehrlich was the joint winner of the 1909 Nobel prize for medicine #Ehrlich developed the first diagnostic method for typhoid fever in 1882, and went on (ten years later) to develop the technique of injecting poisons to produce antibodies#One by-product of Ehrlich's research into the bloodstream with colored dyes was the first synthetic quinine substitute. He used methylene blue to trace the spread of the disease in a sailor with malaria - and the disease was killed by the blue dye .#The "magic bullet" which cured syphilis, compound 606 (or Salvarsan), was an arsenic-based drug. It was one of Ehrlich's assistants who had the idea of trying it in a syphilis patient
